3D Tank Model
Wednesday- After doing the sketch I decided to go back into Maya, it's been a while since I have used it properly, properly since about first year I was at college, so I was a bit rusty but soon got the hang of it. I started with the wheels since they grab some if not most of the attention of the tank. I went into Polygons and got a cylinder, I turned it so it was on its side, I selected insert loop tool 3 times around the middle on the cylinder. I then right clicked and selected edge and mutilated the edged to create more of a wheel shape. I then used the tool Boolean for the rest of the wheel, creating shapes that created the metal part of the wheel, and other circle shapes inside to create a wheel looking model, I was feeling pretty confident since I haven't used maya in a long time and I seemed to know more about it when i first used it when I was creating the tower.
I added more detail into the wheel, I found out I could of textured everything and the holes in the wheel wouldn't be right for a game and it wouldn't work, I figured that I should carry on with the design, because it looks really nice, though next time I design i wont put so much detail and make it simpler, and texture everything so it works in game.
Thursday- Today I decided to make the tire, inspired by a Tank, I used a cylinder shape and flattned it by deleting the top faces, I then moves the vertects around to shape around the wheels and create the over all shape. Then I extruded the flat shape to make it thicker. It was easy until I had to add the track details, by using Edge loop tool around, and missing one face and selecting another, then extruding them inside
And because I can't texture the wheel because the shape is too complicated, i used the colours in Maya .I liked the result despite not being able to texture.
Friday- I made the smaller wheels for the back and the front of the tank, again I added a lot of detail but I didn't want two little tires textured and one big one not being textured at all, but I liked the out come and the look. I used a cylinder then edge loop tool to create the thin shape in the middle, then extruded to add details in the middle.
I also made the cockpit for the vehicle to make it look all attached, I managed to texture this because the shape was so much more simpler than anything else I had made, I used camo because it was inspired by a tank, I thought I should use a pattern that's connects to a tank, I also used martial in Maya to make the window, made it see through as well to give it more of a window effect.
This is the finished product, I am proud how it turned out and I learnt my lesson about adding too much detail, and to rely on text more. I am confident when showing it to everyone on Thursday.
Sketches 3D model!
We were first given the task as a artist to create a model and show off our style/what we can do in under a week. At first I was thinking to do something cute and pink because that's what really interests me and I feel like is a strong point when creating ideas, but then I thought with a class full of boys the chances of them doing something cute and cuddly within the game, and want me as a strong artist on there team would be low and i should challenge my self and see what I can do, I've decided to do a steam punk style tank. I chose to do a tank because I thought they were very manly, and often a lot of boys model tanks, and I have seen it before in class, but seen girl do one. Tanks have never interested me and I don't really like them but I thought it was a good idea to go out of my comfort zone and try something new, and see what i can do my self, without something being cute. I want this model to be quite manly, but it wont be any normal type of tank, it will have a twist to it, With one giant belt in the middle and two giant wheels side by side, and at the back another two little wheels with giant nails sticking out. It would be remote controlled since no man could ever get inside and see from the outside, but I liked the idea enough to draw.

Art
2D Graphics explanation
Since me and Katy have been ahead of schedule, we already made our sprites and now we have started to animate them, we are using a bit map which is made up of 64 by 64 coloured squares to create a graphic these can't be too detailed because of the limitations of pixel art, but then created an effective picture for a game, bit maps was used in games when they first started because consoles were not as advanced as our modern day technologies.
But even though we have 3D games today, the 2D graphic are still used (often in indie games because they are cheap and easy to make) today. When using applications to create our sprite we decided to use Gimp because it's easier to use and free so we both access to it at home, even though Photoshop gave us the option to create 2D sprites, it's very expensive to obtain, but with gimp it is a free download and we easily made our sprites, then copying the image frames we created into Photoshop with the same size canvas we used in gimp (64px by 64px) and we could easily animate the sprite though Photoshop’s easy to use animation feature.
When animating the Sprite, Katy rubbed out the legs and arms then drew on several other frames different points in the arms and legs animations, she then made certain parts visible together on a frame to make the frame of the animation. In completion she managed to make it look like the sprite was stepping forward using only the eight different frames
that were previously made in gimp. Once the process of putting the animation together in Photoshop was complete, we had to save it as a gif file. It took us a while to figure out how to get this right; we hadn't realised we had to save through other means. To save the animation as a moving Gif file, you have to go into File > Save for web and devices. Obviously bits where she rubbed out to put in new stature there was blank bits or the shading was in the wrong place. When colouring our sprites, we created gradients of colours using the colour select. We selected the main colour of the gradient then changed the S and V settings on the colour changer in 10 point intervals to create an even gradient for us to use on our sprites. Creating these gradients gave our sprites a more professional look, with even shading and colour.
